Inspirational People

Helen Keller

Helen Keller was born in America in 1880 and had a normal childhood until, at the age of 19 months, she suddenly lost her sight and her hearing from an illness. All that was left were her abilities to feel, to smell and to taste. This was a terrible disability, especially as a young child in those times, because it meant that she had no way of learning, speaking or interacting in any but the most basic ways with her family. As she got older, it became more obvious that Helen would need someone incredibly skilled, clever and patient, to have a hope of teaching her how to behave and how to communicate. Luckily, God had a plan for such a person to come and be Helen’s teacher: the young woman Anne Sullivan.

Anne devised a way to teach Helen sign language by making the signs onto Helen’s hand so that she could feel the different finger movements. One day she began to understand that these signs had meanings, for example the sign for ‘water’ meant the cool, wet substance she could drink or feel with her hands. This was the beginning of her ability to communicate and to learn. As she grew older, she learnt to fully communicate with sign language, to read and write Braille, and even to speak, all without being able to see and hear. It was a huge effort to achieve as much as she did with her disabilities, but Helen was enormously determined. She had a passion for learning and her education took her all the way to university, which was very uncommon for women at the time, let alone a woman who was deaf and blind. Her incredible achievements made her famous, and she gladly took on the role of being an inspiration for others to strive and reach their full potential.

Her connection to God was with her from the youngest age. When taught about God, she said, “I always knew He was there, but I didn’t know His name!”. And later in life she said, “I know that life is given us so that we may grow in love. And I believe that God is in me as the sun is in the colour and fragrance of the flower, the Light in my darkness, the Voice in my silence.”

Experiences of Helen Keller

See what it feels like to be blind by putting a blindfold over your eyes. Now listen. What sounds do you hear? What do you hear that you didn’t hear before? Try walking from one side of your room to the other. How did it feel to do that without seeing anything? Now ask someone to hold your hand and lead you along. How did that feel? This is what it feels like to be led by God.

Put earmuffs or noise cancelling headphones on too and see what it feels like to be both blind and deaf. Feel someone’s hands in your hands. What do you notice about the experience of touch? Ask them to write letters into the palm of your hand and see if you can understand what they are writing. Now ask them to hand you different objects and see if you can guess what these objects are, by both their feel and their smell.

Saint Francis

St Francis is one of the most important and venerated saints in the history of Christian belief, because of his huge contributions to raise ordinary people’s belief and faith in God. He was born into a wealthy family in 12th century Italy, and as a young man he actually did not show the high level of dedication and compassion that he would be known for in later life. He lived a carefree lifestyle, enjoyed expensive clothes and even fought as a soldier in wars. But one day he started to have a series of mystical experiences, which led him to renounce his family’s wealth and give away all his possessions to beggars, in order to live life as a poor travelling preacher. He wanted to inspire people to follow Jesus’ example of love, compassion, simplicity and humility, Soon, many people were following St Francis and he established monastic orders for men and for women. He travelled widely, even to Egypt and Jerusalem, seeking always to help people find peace and love through God’s word and the Bible. It took huge courage to go to these faraway places where everyone looked different, spoke a different language and worshipped a different God. But St Francis had an unshakeable faith in God and what He had called him to do.

St Francis always showed gentle compassion for all living beings, calling them his ‘brothers and sisters in Christ’. This, coupled with his devotion to the spiritual life, has inspired countless people since the 12th century. Famously, even the birds and beasts of the earth would listen to him preach God’s word.

Experiences of Saint Francis

Imagine deciding to give away all your favourite toys and all your clothes to little children who don’t have any toys or clothes. How does it make you feel? How do you think those little children would feel to receive beautiful toys and clothes when before they didn’t have any?

Imagine going to a place where everyone speaks a different language and are dressed differently and behave differently. How would you feel? What do you think would help you to be brave and have courage when you felt scared?

Imagine that birds and animals can understand what you are saying to them. What would your heart want to tell them?

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was a very humble and compassionate person who dedicated her life to helping “the poorest of the poor” in the world. She was born in 1910 in Albania to a loving and religious family, and decided at a young age that she wished to follow God’s call by saying goodbye to her family to go and become a nun. It wasn’t long after her ordination as a nun that she arrived to live in Calcutta, India, to live there in a convent and educate Indian girls in the convent’s school. One day, while walking in the street, she saw a very sick poor woman who no-one was helping. Immediately, she carried the woman to a hospital and demanded that she be treated, even though there was no money to pay for the treatment. Thus began Mother Teresa’s realisation that God wished her to follow a much more difficult path: to leave her convent and live instead in the streets, with the very poor people that she wanted to help. It took a lot of courage and faith, but luckily, there were people who supported her and she found the ways to create a hospital for these very poor people, where no-one had to pay for a warm bed, food and treatment.

Over the years, more and more people decided to follow Mother Teresa, to help her and to give to her mission of helping the poorest of the poor. For the rest of her life she worked tirelessly to bring the love of Jesus into every physical thing she did to help poor people. She was enormously loved and respected in her life, and her good work helping millions of poor people continues to be done by her follower nuns to this day.

Experiences of Mother Teresa

Think of a time when someone in your family or one of your friends was sick. How did it feel when you wanted to help them feel better? What do you think you could do to show them your love during these times?

Imagine that you are sick and there is no one there to help you. How does it feel? Now imagine helping someone who is sick and has no one else there to help them. How does that feel?

Think of your home, which is comfortable and safe. Now imagine that God asks you to leave your home because He wants you to do special work in helping people. What thoughts and feelings will you have?
